Intelligent Machines Podcast's Growth

It was 2009 when smartphones became the standard and app downloads exploded. Facebook gobbled up the global and multi-generational markets, Twitter rose to social importance, and books went digital. It was the dawn of the mobile computing era, and Google expanded and shifted to fuel it.

It was with that background that This Week in Google (TWiG) was born. TWiT already had a Mac/Apple show, MacBreak Weekly, and a Windows/Microsoft show, Windows Weekly, but not a show about Google and the cloud.

This Week in Google premiered in August 2009 with Leo Laporte, Gina Trapani, and Jeff Jarvis as hosts. The show quickly gained prominence in the tech podcasting field; it was named Best of 2010 in Podcasts by iTunes Rewind. Many Google products have come and gone as This Week in Google stood witness. As the company and the tech industry as a whole continue to evolve, topics of discussion expand. Gina left the show in 2015 to focus on other projects. Later, Stacey Higginbotham filled her chair from May 2016 until August 2023 and Paris Martineau joined the show in October 2023.

Currently, Leo, Jeff, and Paris host the show. Leo is a veteran media personality and founder of the TWiT podcast network. Jeff is Director of the Tow-Knight Center for Entrepreneurial Journalism at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism, City University of New York. Paris Martineau is an investigative journalist at The Information.

At the end of January 2025, This Week in Google was renamed to Intelligent Machines, reflecting the show's change in focus on artificial intelligence.

Topics Discussed on this Technology Podcast

Intelligent Machines now covers much more than Google and cloud computing. Every week, panelists discuss everything from headline technology news to obscure topics related to Big Tech, regulations, ethics, social impacts, and more. They dissect Google's products, services, and corporate leadership, plus workforce issues, national and international regulations, legal developments, politics, consumer privacy issues, and more. Besides Google, panelists examine influential companies like Facebook, Amazon, Twitter, Tesla, and TikTok. Social media and misinformation issues are also frequent topics of debate.

The panelists bring their diverse and sometimes contrarian perspectives for an always lively discussion. Conversations may occasionally turn provocative, but the panelists never take themselves too seriously and always brighten up the show with their senses of humor.
