Coming up on iOS Today, rosemary Orchard and I, micah Sargent, talk about some accessories and gizmos you may want to add to your setup. Stay tuned. Podcasts you love From people you trust. This is Twit. This is iOS Today, episode 748, with Rosemary Orchard and me, micah Sargent, recorded Tuesday April 1st 2025 for Thursday April 17th 2025. Accessories and gizmos. Hello and welcome to iOS Today, the show where we talk all things iOS, ipados, watchos, homepodos and more. Didn't quite hit that note. My voice is dry. I am one of your hosts. Micah Sargent, the singing salesman, I don't know.
01:04 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
Oh yeah, sorry. I, oh yeah, sorry, I, I have all the things ready, oh wow. And I brought the goodies because, you know, somebody said accessories and gizmos and I just kind of had to go yeah, grab the cool stuff. So I've got some things here ready to show.
01:19 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Get it all in hand. So this is the. I think we do these episodes every once in a while, where we gather together and show off some of the tech that we're using. That we think is pretty cool and might be something that you yourself are interested in. Now, these episodes tend to be a little long, so I think we should just get right underway. Rosemary, kick it off with your first pick.
01:50 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
Well, my first pick is a keyboard, because a keyboard is just one of those things where it's really nice to own it, and this is the Logitech MX Keys Mini. Now, I'm going to say this is the MX Keys Mini. There is also a mechanical version of this. I'm going to say this is the MX Keys Mini. There is also a mechanical version of this. There's also the non-mini version, which has the number pad and the arrows are off to one side and it's got like the home page and buttons. But there are two reasons why I love this. Number one, usb-c for charging or for plugging in via a cable if you need to. And number two, you can connect this to three devices.
02:24
So sometimes I need a keyboard with my phone rarely, but sometimes. Sometimes I need it with my mac, sometimes I need it with my ipad, sometimes I want it with a tv, like a tv tv, because it's like, yeah, you need to like sign into, like this thing to be able to install the latest update. And have you tried typing on like a one to nine or zero to nine keyboard recently, like I used to be able to do t9 texting back in the day, but it often doesn't even let you do that properly, and it's just like use the arrow keys on a qwerty keyboard on screen, and I'm there going, for the sake of my sanity, a bluetooth keyboard's one of my favorite devices, um, so obviously I have the white version, uh, the silver with white, white keys here, but it does also come in a sort of space grayish color but with black keys, if you would prefer that, and honestly, I really love this keyboard. It feels nice to use. It's got nice sort of round dimples on the square keys so it's easy for your fingers to find the right keys. And, depending on which one you get, you can either get the mac one, the windows one or the universal one. This one is the universal one, so I have vertical splits on some of my keys, you know, visually, not physically, so that it could be the option key or the start button on windows, for example, which makes it easy if I need to connect this to another device.
03:47
And, yeah, honestly, keyboards they're, they're just one of those really handy things to have. Logitech make good ones, um, and so this retails for 99. You can often get it for less, uh, if you look at amazon deals, um, or similar. And also don't forget, uh, the classic. Somebody bought it and they're not using it, so you can pick it up really cheaply secondhand from somebody. But yeah, this is one of my favorite keyboards and obviously if I'm going somewhere and I might be asked to solve tech support problems, I'll take this with me because this way at least I know I'm going to have a decent keyboard that's not necessarily sticky and covered in gunk.
04:23 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Nice, all right. So for the longest time I have wanted to have well, I shouldn't say for the longest time ever since Apple introduced the fine woven cases and then suddenly kind of made them disappear but, more importantly, got rid of its own leather cases and only started offering, uh, the silicone models and, of course, the clear case. Um, I have missed having a leather iPhone case. I, I like the premium feel of the leather case. I like the softness of the leather case. Um, I like how I can clean it better. And I have tried lots of third party cases that, for the most part, just didn't do it for me. They just weren't quite what I was after. And for the longest time this part, truly for the longest time I have avoided like the plague any Otterbox case, because Otterbox is known and this is personally for me, otterbox cases are fantastic when it comes to people wanting to protect their devices. If you are worried that your device is going to get hurt, you buy the Otterbox case and you put it in this sealed bubble of a case that was never for me sealed bubble of a case that was never for me Bulky, unnecessary, because I'm not a phone dropper or herter. Usually knock on wood, and so I avoided that brand. However, I was going caseless for a bit because I got tired of my clear case from Apple and decided you know what, I want to put it back in a case. I want a case, let's figure it out. So I was scrolling through the Apple store and I came across this beautiful green case and thought that is interesting. And then I saw it was OtterBox and I thought I don't know about that. But I went ahead and I picked it up $59.95. And it is delightful. So this is a case that is made of cactus leather. It is cactus leather. That is not referencing the fact that it is green. It is actual leather of cactus.
06:46
I just happened to get the green one. Obviously it's a two-tone model. I'm trying to hide my eyes while still making sure that it's in sight, because the autofocus For people who are listening like why do you need to hide your eyes? It's a two-tone case and it has the nice machined buttons on the side. So the side button, the volume up and down button and the action button all get a machined button there, so it feels really nice.
07:16
The only two quibbles I have about it is I tend to be someone who likes an iPhone case that has an opening at the bottom because of the ability to swipe up. This does not, but I haven't missed it because the bottom of the case is pretty shallow, so it hasn't been too big of a problem. And then, because this case was made before you know there was any absolute certainty and clarity, I think, on what Apple is going to be doing with the camera control. It is just a cut out for the camera control button on the side, as opposed to what you get with Apple's first party cases and some late model third party cases that offer what is essentially a pass through to the action or to the camera control button by way of a capacitive kind of transference button, by way of a capacitive kind of transference button. I am okay with it. I ended up being okay with it because with this my finger naturally slides down into that spot there, and so it actually feels a little bit more secure using the camera control button this way than otherwise. I love this case so far. It has the magnet on the back. Like everything still works. My Apple leather I still have an Apple leather mag safe case that walks to it just fine, because I got it in green. It looks great with this.
08:38
I have been very, very happy with this Otterbox what's called the statement series cactus leather case. I think if there was one other thing I would happily leave off, but obviously they're not going to because it is their company, the Otterbox. Let me see if I can get the camera to refocus here. Yeah, the Otterbox sort of word mark is carved into the side of it. Not big on having the branding kind of on my stuff like that, but it's fine it's. It's. It's in a place where most people are probably not going to see it.
09:12
Um, and I'm very I like it feels good in hand. It's the texture is really nice and so it's almost kind of like fidgety in the sense that I can sort of, you know, run my fingers across it and it feels nice. Knowing that it's made of cactus is just kind of cool but also better for the environment. And yeah, I like I want to learn how to make cactus leather because of this. That's what this is inspired in me. So I can't speak highly enough of this case. I really, really like it. And again, that's the Otterbox statement series cactus leather case. It is, I believe, exclusive um in the Apple app store, if I remember correctly. Uh, so you will have to go there to pick it up. All right, rosemary, what's next on your list?
10:06 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
Well, next on my list is a little thing that I love to take with me when I'm traveling, because, despite the fact that the Apple TV has physically gotten smaller, I still can't use it on a plane. That's just not a thing that I can do, and also it's just not really practical to travel in an Apple TV, especially when I'm already traveling with an iPad. But one of the things I miss when I'm doing things like watching shows and stuff is having a remote control, and so I have the Satechi R2 Bluetooth multimedia remote control. They also do an R1, which is slightly different. So if you are interested in this, have a look at both and see which one works for you.
10:44
Now, what I like about this is this is a metal remote control with plastic buttons on it, so it's similar in some ways to the newer Siri remotes. It does charge via USB-C at the bottom. It has a power on and off slider, so it's not going to randomly be pressing buttons in your bag. But this on the side has a slider. You slide it up for multimedia, you slide it down for presentation mode. So if you're going to be giving a presentation, you'd like a remote control for that, like a physical remote clicker for going to like different slides and so on. You can use this and it has like buttons that have a nice click to it as well. Um, now in multimedia mode, which is why I primarily use it, for it's got your play, pause your volume, up and down, uh, your fast forwarding rewinding, which works in vast majority of apps. It does. Unfortunately, the rewinding and fast forwarding rewinding, which works in vast majority of apps it does. Unfortunately, the rewinding and fast forwarding apparently doesn't work in the YouTube app, but if you watch YouTube and Safari then it does work there. And it's also got like an onscreen laser pointer feature in the presentation mode.
11:43
And, yeah, this is just a really nice remote that you can connect to an iPad or an iPhone or a Mac and use it as a presentation remote and a multimedia remote, and I personally find that this makes you know my travel experience for a whole bunch of things just a bit nicer. You know I'm delivering a presentation. I no longer have to worry about making sure that I am within keyboard range or whatever of my device as I'm walking around talking. If I'm watching something, I can be snuggled up under the covers in my hotel bed as I'm falling asleep and I can hit pause on this. To you know, stop whatever it is before I go to sleep and all of those things.
12:27
And yeah, I personally just really like I mean I love Satechi stuff anyway but there are two. Bluetooth multimedia remote control is one of those little things. It doesn't take up a lot of space, so it just lives in my little travel pouch of things which I happen to have right here. It just goes in there and it's always there, and then I have the ability to control my devices easily, as I would like to. And this retails for $44.99, but you can often pick it up cheaper on sale, which I greatly appreciate.
12:59 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
My next pick. I've shown this off on MacBreak Weekly before and I just love this thing. It was a Christmas gift weekly before and I just love this thing was a Christmas gift. Uh, it is the Lark L A R Q. Uh, pure viz bottle. Um, so the Lark bottle.
13:15
The reason why I wanted one is because I knew that it had a? Uh, uv lights in the lid, and so essentially what you do, what happens, is you fill it with water and you drink your water, and then every few hours it lights up that UV light which helps to kill bacteria that starts to collect in a water bottle kill bacteria that starts to collect in a water bottle. I'm notoriously like I drink a lot of water and so I'm always I've always got water with me, but that means that I'm constantly refilling my water bottle and maybe not cleaning it out as much as I should, because I'm just like oh, time for more water and more water in it. Your water bottle starts to get a little stinky and then it comes time to clean it. Well, mine just goes in it. Your water bottle starts to get a little stinky and then it comes time to clean it. Well, mine, just goes in the sink until I'm ready. With this, it's a lot longer between cleaning periods because of that UV light.
14:18
What I didn't realize is that it also had some more features. I literally only wanted it for that. It just so happened that when I got it I learned oh, here's what else it does. It also tracks your water intake and gives you reminders throughout the day to have you continue to drink. So it has a sensor inside that can tell how far down the water is from the top of the lid. Down, the water is from the top of the lid and when you take off the lid, the accelerometer and other sensors inside can say oh, you know, you're jostling the lid, so I need to remeasure the current water level. When you turn the bottle, it also runs the sensor to measure the current water level, assuming that you have probably consumed some water from it. Then it tells okay, this is how far down it is from my last reading. Or if you have just filled it, then it goes okay, this person has filled it up again. It's time to kind of start fresh. When it goes down from there, then we add to how much water has been consumed If you set like this is how much water I want to have consumed in a day, and it gives you some recommendations, and then it helps to split that up throughout the day.
15:30
By X time you should have consumed this amount of water, and so every you know, every little while, if you have not gone to pick up the water bottle again, the lights on the top will flash to say, hey, don't forget to have some water. It's my little reminder. Oh yeah, time to hydrate, because having water all at once when you realize that you're dehydrated is not the same as keeping hydrated throughout the day. It makes a difference to to keep yourself hydrated throughout the day.
16:01
The lark, though, also has a third feature, which is a special straw that you can install. I currently don't have the straw installed, but you can install a straw that has on the end of it a little filter, and so it helps to filter out water, and I've used that because at home I have a filtration system, because I'm a huge water drinker, and I also like my dogs to have filtered water instead of just water from the sink, and so all of that works at home. But if I'm out and about, or if I'm at a friend's house and I brought my water bottle along and they obviously don't have the same filtration offerings as I do in most cases. Having this little straw in there is helpful to kind of clear out the things that I would prefer to not, you know, have as part of my water intake, so I found it very handy.
16:55
In many ways it is on the pricey side, but by golly is it not the most attractive uh water bottle I've ever owned, as well as a really cool high-tech water bottle, and now it beautifully matches my very green theme with my phone as well, thanks to that OtterBox case. So this is the smaller of the options at $119, although it's on sale for a little bit right now, and Amazon regularly does sales as well, so be sure to use Camel Camel Camel to keep track of that. And yeah, that's the Lark. Pureviz 2. What is next on your list, rosemary?
17:40 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
Next on my list is something that's not headphones and it is speakers, but it's personal speakers, because I have a little difficulty. If I'm wearing overhead headphones, like I'm wearing the Airpods Max right now, after a couple hours it starts to hurt Like it doesn't matter what it is, but the band will just start digging into the top of my head. In-ear headphones are fine, but again, after a while it's not particularly comfortable, and wearing in-ear headphones for really long, extended periods of time can be not great for your ears. But as I wander around my house doing things like cleaning, tidying chores at the weekend, or I'm just, you know, getting up doing a bit of cooking, doing some preparation, then going back doing some reading and so on, I want to take the audio with me. Now, obviously, I have the choice of playing things on HomePods around my house, but if it's, say, an audiobook, music is considerably less noticeable. But an audiobook, I have found, can drift a little out of sync between speakers, which is not great. And so I have the Sony SRS-NB10 wireless neckband speaker, so you literally just drape this around your neck. It's got two little speakers at the back. It does have a microphone and so on at the front. So if you wanted to use this as like a conference type headset obviously it's not going to work in an open plan office with lots of people in, but if you're somebody who works from home, it can be great for that Then you can do that as well. And this just connects to your device, uh, via bluetooth, and it plays out of the two little speakers at the back and it just sits around your neck and it's honestly great.
19:17
I really love this. It does not weigh a lot so I can wear it, and I can wear it over my hair, which, you know it it. I have relatively long hair, so if it were heavy it would pull on my hair and that would start to hurt and that wouldn't be comfortable. I do tend to pull my hair out just because that's what I prefer to do. But I have also worn this underneath, like those giant fluffy winter hoodies, the ones that come down like to your knees and have got like sherpa lining and I can still hear like. And it's fine because, like it just sits on top, it does have some physical controls built into the front of each part. So over on this side I have the power on the Bluetooth and speaker and then also I have a little flap that I can open to charge this via USB-C, which is great, and then over on the other side I have buttons for like play, pause, um, which is the middle one, and volume up, volume down, so I can control this on the physical speakers or through whatever I'm playing back from.
20:16
Now they sell a couple of different versions of this um. This one retails for about 159 directly from sony. However, what I really like about this is when you connect this to something like a TV or an Apple TV or similar, because that way, as you get up and you're like, oh right, I just need to go rotate this thing in the oven, for example, going back to our last cooking series, or I'm just going to run and grab my water bottle because I left it in the other room and I need to take a drink. My phone's just reminded me. You can still hear things and, yes, I really appreciate the fact that I can have a really comfortable listening experience everywhere.
20:52
I go with just one thing connected to my phone and range on this is pretty good as well. I have to say I forgot that I was using this at one point. I was kind of just used to the audio following me everywhere. I left my phone inside and I went to take out the recycling, which is a little bit of a walk out of the building and around the corner, um, and so it is like a good you know, 30 meters through multiple walls, uh, so like 150 feet through multiple walls with a lot of interference, um, and it didn't cut out, which I was incredibly impressed with. So, yeah, I have to give props for Sony for their wireless neckband speaker.
21:33 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Yeah, that is again in the right setting. That is a good, good choice, All right, one more mention for me. This device is something that I think is a really cool option for people who especially for people who live in older homes and trying to get signal to places that you need it. And Ubiquity makes an app called Wi-Fi man and I was doing an episode of Hands-On Tech and someone in the chat had mentioned it because there was a person who was having some issues and so you can download and use Wi-Fi man on Linux, on macOS and on Windows and it sort of is a spectrum analyzer. It can help to kind of analyze your own network and see what's running properly, what's not. But in learning about that, I just so happened to come across a device that Ubiquiti sells called the Wi-Fi man Wizard. It's available for $99. And the Wi-Fi man Wizard is a little spectrum analyzer that comes with a little silicone case that you can use to magnet to the back of your phone and it integrates with the app the Wi-Fi man app that's also available on iOS and on Android to be a full on spectrum analyzer. So it goes past just being able to kind of use the built in Wi-Fi radio of your device and compare it with the Wi-Fi radio of another device, which is how the app works, with something that is purpose built to do this. It gives the Wi-Fi man app a lot more functionality and a lot more understanding of how the network is set up. You can break it up between different channels, so suddenly I can see across my whole 2.4 gigahertz network what channels are busy, what channels are great, what signal is great Five gigahertz I have one six gigahertz band as well, and so seeing how that one is performing. And then what's cool is that, if you want to, you can also use AR to actually create an augmented reality map of your space. And then the Wi-Fi spectrum analyzer is used to map out the signal in a given space so green where the signal is high, red where the signal is low, throughout the entire space. So then I can see oh, in this corner of this room things are going great. But because this and this are in the way, now I understand why it's not possible for me to get the service that I'm looking for or the speed that I'm looking for in the home. So really cool little device that helps you again sort of analyze the Wi-Fi spectrum in your home, and this ends up being, I think, one of those tools that like for me, it was mostly one-time use right, I don't do a whole.
25:00
Once you've got everything settled in and figured out, you don't do a whole lot of changing to where your Wi-Fi routers are placed If you've had the opportunity to go. This is exactly what I want, but you end up moving. You want to use it again. If you have friends who are trying to get things, they're having an issue Suddenly, this comes in handy and you can go oh well, here's why. And I think more importantly, you can finally teach that friend who takes their router and sticks it into a metal cabinet underneath their television why they're having such Wi-Fi signal issues in their home, where before you'd go, it doesn't work that way. And they go. You've got the facts. Now you've got the, and you can say see, it's not getting out of the spot. So that's pretty neat as well. All right, let's round out our accessories and gizmos with Rosemary's final pick.
25:58 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
Well, my final pick. I've only got one part of it here. I should say there is a second part to it, but this is the Orbit Key 2-in-1 Tech Accessory Pouch. Now folks may be looking at this on the video and going, hey, this looks kind of similar to like the Peak Design case and things like that. Yes, a lot of these do look similar. So this has a little pocket on the front where I have a Field Notes notebook. I highly recommend keeping a little notebook in your tech accessory pouch because you never know when you're going to need to make a note. And I also have an AirTag in the front pocket as well because you don't want to leave your tech accessory pouch behind if it's got all those goodies in it. And then inside it's got multiple elasticated pockets on both sides and then it's got a divider in the middle with a secondary divider there and I've got a little remote control in there. It's got a divider in the middle with a secondary divider there and I've got a little remote control in there. It's got a couple of pen loops, so I have my classic four-in-one Pride pen here. So it's got all the rainbow on it, so I've got four colors to write with and all the colors on my pen and for demonstration effects, because I don't usually keep this. I have my giant Uni-Ball 1 here, which is a very chunky pen, um, and I love writing with this thing. I didn't, I wouldn't usually take this with me, but it was on my desk and I was like I'm just going to demonstrate how great the pen loops are on this thing, um. So, yeah, I really love this little orbit key um case.
27:15
It comes with another smaller tech pouch which you can pop inside or keep separately in your bag. It has a nice little carry handle on the back, but it's also got places around the sides where you can like loop your fingers in, to like just hold it or whatever if you need to. And, yeah, I find that this is a really good size. It's got enough space in the big compartment where I popped in the remote I was talking about earlier and, yeah, I could put a decent sized battery pack in there. I currently have an esr mag safe stand.
27:45
I've got some cables in here, including my anchor cable that divides into two, which I've talked about previously on the show, and, yeah, it's an easy wipe clean material as well, and I appreciate the fact it comes in black and I think it comes in a brown as well, and then there's a partnership with marie kondo, but like it's just black and the orbit key logo on it, it is just a little silver.
28:03
It's not particularly intrusive or anything, so it's a nice way to stick all of your travel stuff together so that you can have this. And a bonus tip for you folks if you're packing something like this, it's probably going to be quite heavy. I recommend sticking this in the bottom of your backpack, not the top of your backpack if you're using a backpack or any other kind of bag, because if you put it in the bottom, then when you put that on the floor, if this is at the top, it's going to take all of that weight and go bonk and it's going to fall over and land on your foot. If you put this in the bottom, it will help keep everything upright. So, yeah, a little reminder for you. But yeah, I really like this. And also, even when it's still somewhat squishy and malleable like things aren't going to get broken inside of it, but they are going to be you are going to be able to like squish this case if you're trying to shove those last minute bonus purchase souvenirs into a carry-on, for example around it all right.
28:55 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Um, I'm actually going to round out the show with one more interesting uh pick. So sorry, kevin, let me throw this in. Uh, this is courtesy of scooter x, who posted earlier today. I really think I'm going to get some of this. Um, check out about line 22.
29:23
D brand has announced what, even though it's April Fool's and it is a funny, haha, it's also a real product called the touch grass and it's made up of thousands of strands of fake grass and their skins or cases for your different devices. I'm not usually a dbrand kind of person. However, I think this would be very delightful to have to run your fingers across some nice like little AstroTurf grass for your device. So they have it for the iPhone, the Mac oh, my goodness, my whole MacBook covered with AstroTurf would be so cool. Ipad, also the let's see what is included in other air pods and air tag. Uh, as well as ASUS.
30:24
Um the gaming handheld, um some some grips for, like the, the, oh, those, that's their cases. Um, google devices like the pixel, nintendo, the. We are, I always say the, we the switch, um the Switch, the Valve Steam Deck, on and on and on and on and on, available at, I think, a really good price. So I just may have to touch grass. That's oof, I like it. I like it, yeah, so I'm throwing that in there as well. Let's give that a name of Touch Grass.
31:03 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
So that is from, uh, the d brand brand I really appreciate their, their, how far they've gone with this, with the whole like windows. I think that's a windows 98 ui. Uh, it's. It's definitely not as recent as me, but I don't think it's quite as far back as windows 95, but it's like 95, 98 era. April Fool's joke that's actually real because that's what dbrand do. So if you actually want this, it is a joke product but it's a real product that you can purchase. So yeah, I kind of want this now.
31:39 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Yeah, I think I'm going to do it for my iPad. Yeah, I think that'd be perfect. Oh, I wonder if it's for the iPad mini. Yeah, okay, touch grass. All right, really quick.
31:53
Let's move on to the news, which is that Apple has announced its Worldwide Developers Conference and since, as you know, apple every year holds its WWDC this will be the week of June 9th the event is the time where Apple has always, and will very much likely continue, to announce the latest versions of its operating systems. I'm very excited about this year, rosemary, because we are about to be presented, as we've heard, as is rumored, as is reported by Mark Gurman that we're going to see a huge refresh in the design of the various operating systems. Why does that make me excited? Because it keeps Rosemary and I full fit to bursting with so many new opportunities to teach you all about your devices. And it's just, it's fun to get to see and learn new things and experience new things. It's fun to get to see and learn new things and experience new things. So I, for one, have a lot of of of like hope and joy going into this WWDC.
33:13
As Apple, you know, takes off the wraps on its new systems and we get to see what things are going to look like and how they're going to behave, because I had German on tech News Weekly and German specifically said it's not just a visual redesign, it is a user experience redesign as well. We're not just getting a new coat of paint. This is going to be a complete overhaul of the system, so I know a lot of you will have questions after that happens, and that means exciting things to come for us here on iOS. Yes, indeed. Are you thinking about attending this year?
33:59 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
I was looking at doing it but timing it just, unfortunately, as always, ends up clashing with a couple of other things I've got going on really close to the time. So I, at the moment, I'm not applying on planning on flying over, for especially because, uh, it's unlikely that I'm going to get a ticket, uh, and by the time you find out if you've got a ticket, it's very expensive to book things.

So I would have to speculatively pay for a plane ticket and a hotel and then maybe not even get to go to WWDC and unfortunately, unlike previous times, there aren't that many parallel events going on in the same week.
